1. Make a keyword strategy.

Once you open Keyword Planner, There are two methods for developing a keyword strategy:

  1. By selecting Discover new keywords, you can look for new keywords.
  2. By clicking, upload current keyword phrases. Get forecasts for search volume.

Find fresh keywords

A. Identify new keyword suggestions
To see keyword suggestions, type terms or websites linked to your company.
  1. Sign in to your Google Ads account.
  2. Click the tools iconGoogle Ads | tools [Icon] , then under "Planning", click Keyword Planner.
  3. Select Find new keywords.
  4. There are 3 ways to discover new keyword ideas:
    1. Start with keywords: Enter phrases that refer to your goods or services. Multiple phrases can be separated with a comma and space.
      1. Google will attempt to filter out keywords unrelated to what you have to offer once you enter your domain.
    2. Start with a website: Google will search for keywords associated with the content of any page you enter.
    3. Preview keyword ideas in ad groups: In order to automatically find new keywords for your top campaigns, Keyword Planner will attempt to categorize keywords. Learn more About organizing keywords in Keyword Planner
  5. Click Get results.

You'll get a list of keywords associated with what you input after clicking "Get results." You haven't included these keywords in your plan. You can now change your list by adding filters and categories to make it easier to identify the items that fit your strategy.

Note: It is impossible to find or forecast keywords with extremely low search volume or sensitive keywords. An error message and prompt requesting that you try different keywords or URLs will appear in those cases.

B. Edit your list of potential keywords.

Using filters and categories, you can now alter your list of potential keyword phrases. Find out more specific advice on editing your keyword list.

Filter

Based on factors like competitiveness, impression share, and keyword text, reduce the number of keywords in your list. For instance, you could wish to look at keyword suggestions where prices as low as $1 might be sufficient to rank highly.

  1. Click Add filter.
  2. Select a filter and enter its values.
  3. Your list of ideas will now match the filter.

Refine by category

See groups of keywords based on their themes, brands or categories.

  1. Look for the “Refine keywords” side panel on the “Keyword ideas” page.
  2. Open the categories beneath it to see characteristics related to your keyword ideas.
  3. Uncheck the box next to each category to remove these keywords from your list.
    • You might get a category for shoe color, for instance, if your search terms are associated with running shoes. You would uncheck the box for all other colors in order to just see keywords for "red running sneakers."
C. Add keywords to your plan and see a performance forecast

There are two ways to include keywords in your campaigns once you have a list of them:

  1. To get projections of the success of the keywords and to opportunistically start a fresh campaign, add them to your keyword strategy.
    1. Check each keyword you want to include in your strategy, and then either add it to an existing ad group or create a new one with a name.
    2. Select a match type using the “Broad match” dropdown.
    3. For a new plan, click Add keywords to create a plan.
    4. For additions to existing plans, click Add keyword.
  2. Ad groups in already running campaigns can be given keywords.
    1. Select keyword ideas.
    2. Select Existing campaigns in the “Plan” dropdown menu.
